Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works, Southampton

Paul Basham Associates were pleased to assist 4Delivery and Southern Water on the redevelopment of the Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works in Southampton.

The brief

Following planning success to redevelop Centenary Quay we were tasked with providing support for a tricky exercise which involved increasing the sewage capacity at the treatment works by 6000 homes whilst remaining functional to the existing homes in Southampton. Our Transport Planners supported the planning application and our Civils team were asked to assist with the detailed off-site highway design for the site access improvements on the eastern bank of the River Itchen.

Our approach

Our Transport Statement considered the traffic impact of the scheme through various stages of implementation, preparing technical drawings to demonstrate the suitability of the site compound through the phasing plans and final layout for HGVs/LGvs and personnel maintenance vehicles. We also identified suitable routes through the local road network for construction vehicles to minimise disruption on the local road network.

Following planning consent Paul Basham Associates carried out the detailed highway design for the site access and liaised with Southampton City Council to gain full technical approval. An existing shallow culvert located in the highway required careful consideration within the proposed design and landscaping was incorporated into the frontage. Running in parallel with the technical approval process, Paul Basham Associates liaised directly with the relevant statutory undertakers readying any utility diversion works for the contractor.

The result

After contributing to a successful planning application we negotiated full technical approval for the S278 Highway Works. Construction for the site is complete, forming critical infrastructure for the city of Southampton
