Paul Basham Associates worked with Southampton City Council and local stakeholders to assess and implement a pedestrian link, ensuring transport BREEAM compliance.
The Brief
Having built up a positive relationship with The University of Southampton through several projects including the Highfield Campus’s wider parking strategy, The University sought our Transport Planning, Travel Planning and BREEAM expertise to support the extension to the existing Jubilee Sports Centre.
Our Approach
We successfully collaborated with Southampton City Council’s highways officers, local councillors, and the project team to identify the scope of assessment. This included the provision of a complicated pedestrian link into the campus gardens to the rear and ensuring transport BREEAM compliance. The extension was built on the previous, well-used car parks, resulting in the loss of a ~130 parking spaces. We produced a Transport Statement, which successfully argued that the loss of these spaces, in the context of the University’s wider parking strategy (which we helped develop), would not result in overspill parking or highway safety concerns.
In addition, community engagement was a key consideration for the proposals, with Paul Basham Associates representing the scheme at several public consultation events with councillors and local residents.
The Result
The proposals received no objections, with the local highway authority providing a positive recommendation Planning permission granted in September 2022 with construction completed in 2023
