Working closely with Portsmouth City Council, this project was a culmination of Paul Basham Associates Planning & Technical skills to provide highway input into the redevelopment of the former St Mary's Hospital site in the heart of Portsmouth.
The brief
We were independently identified by Highwood Group and Bellway Homes as the right consultancy given their experience of working on various schemes within Portsmouth, in both the residential and care sectors. We were therefore able to utilise our experience to support the Transport Planning elements needed to support a planning application.
Our approach
Paul Basham Associates Transport Planning and Civil Engineering teams undertook the internal highways design alongside a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan for these two Reserved Matters planning applications which collectively totalled 192 dwellings and a 60 bedroom care home in the heart of Portsmouth.
Working closely with Portsmouth City Council, Simon Cooper and HGP Architects, we established innovative and sensitive approached to discouraging ‘rat running’ through the site, utilising good Manual for Streets practices, and creating an accessible pedestrian friendly environment.
For both the care home and residential elements we provided a through and detailed layout review including vehicle tracking, visibility splay review and assessing geometries. We also prepared Transport Statements, Travel Plans and associated drawings.
The result
Now fully built out and occupied, both the care home and residential elements of the development looked fantastic in the sun on a recent site visit. We are proud to have contributed to the upturn in the local areas' built environment with this modern and innovative estate.
From our client
Highwood have been appointing Paul Basham Associates since their formation and we value their constructive input. We have now worked together on a large range of projects from inception to completion and trust that this will continue. They provide a very personal service which complements Highwood’s approach.
