Former Odeon Cinema, George Street, Oxford

Paul Basham Associates were delighted to work with Marick Real Estates on behalf of Oxford City Council for the redevelopment of the Odeon Cinema, George Street, Oxford.

The Brief

The development involved a car free 145 key aparthotel and community space in the centre of Oxford on the site of the Odeon Cinema. We were tasked with achieving support from the highway authority, with the transport strategy needing to respond to the high number of pedestrians in the area, with George Street also being a key bus corridor in the city.

Our Approach

Working closely with Marick Real Estates ltd we developed a delivery and servicing strategy that carefully responded to the constraints. We liaised extensively with various stakeholders to develop the design, ultimately summarised in a BREEAM Travel Plan & Transport Assessment. The scheme was proposed as car free given the sustainable location, but cycle parking required careful negotiation within the spatial constraints. Given the intense use of the local area, the construction strategy also required early consideration, with various options tested to minimise impact on the public transport networks.

The Result

The application received planning permission in January 2025, and we look forward to seeing it progress further.
