Under the Spotlight with Ian Saunders

Ian joined Paul Basham Associates' Welborne Team as Project Manager in October 2023. We recently caught up with him to find out about his time with the company so far, and this is what he had to say...

What does your job involve?

As the Project Manager for the Welborne team at Paul Basham Associates, my role revolves around two key areas:

  1. Client Relationships: I strive to maintain and enhance our relationships with clients by being open, honest, and dependable. This means sharing information transparently and attending regular client meetings to ensure our resources are balanced effectively. My goal is to deliver both our design packages and any other engineering and management support needed, whether for short-term tasks or long-term projects.
  2. Team Management: I collaborate closely with the Senior Associate and Senior Engineer to lead our team of engineers. My focus is on maintaining team morale, helping individuals achieve their career goals, and ensuring the team operates happily and efficiently. It’s important to me that everyone feels supported and motivated.

What do you enjoy most about the role?

I enjoy the variety of work involved with the Welborne Garden Village Project. What makes it truly enjoyable is the positive attitude of the Paul Basham Associates team at Welborne. Everyone is eager to pool and share their knowledge and experiences, which means we can tackle almost any challenge together. It’s a great feeling to be part of such a collaborative and supportive team.

What challenges you each day?

One of the biggest challenges I face is adapting to a technically focused team of engineers, given my background in operational team leadership and management. My technical skills are growing rapidly, which can sometimes be mentally taxing, especially as I approach middle age! However, this challenge also presents an opportunity for personal and professional growth, which I embrace.

What do you get up to in your free time?

Both my wife and I work full-time, so we try to make the most of our weekends by spending quality time with our son. We’re usually on the go but I must admit, I do enjoy a Sunday afternoon nap at around 14:15 (lap 5 of the F1) - It’s a small but well-deserved moment of downtime!
