What is a Travel Plan Coordinator?

A Travel Plan Coordinator (TPC) is the individual responsible for overseeing the implementation, promotion, and day-to-day operation of a Travel Plan. This plan aims to encourage sustainable travel modes and reduce reliance on single-occupancy vehicle use and are traditionally secured through planning consents on residential, workplace and school developments.

The TPC acts as a central point of contact for residents, staff, local authorities, and other stakeholders regarding transportation-related matters.

At Paul Basham Associates every site has at least two dedicated members of staff who are directly responsible for delivering the TPC work, however, our team work seamlessly across all TPC projects, to ensure that TPC delivery remains consistent.

Key Responsibilities of a Travel Plan Coordinator:

  • Implementing Travel Plan Measures: This includes coordinating activities such as managing financial incentives for sustainable travel and supporting car club implementation on site.
  • Acting as a Point of Contact: The TPC serves as the primary point of contact for residents, staff, local authorities, and other stakeholders regarding transport-related queries and information.
  • Liaising with Stakeholders: The TPC works closely with the local planning authority, transport authorities, and other relevant parties to ensure the Travel Plan's effective implementation and monitoring.
  • Monitoring and Reporting: The TPC tracks the effectiveness of the Travel Plan's measures through surveys and other data collection methods and prepares periodic reports for the relevant authorities.
  • Promoting Sustainable Travel: The TPC actively promotes sustainable transportation options through various initiatives and communication channels. This usually includes creating travel specific Welcome Packs, newsletters, posters, travel webpages and/or social media posts.
  • Updating the requirements of the Travel Plan: The TPC ensures the Travel Plan remains relevant and effective, as it is a live document. This is done by updating the requirements of the travel plan through regular monitoring and reporting to the local authority. Any changes are done in collaboration with the key stakeholders involved with the site.
  • Organising Events: The TPC may organise events like "Dr Bike" cycle maintenance events or other initiatives to encourage participation in the Travel Plan.
  • Managing Travel Plan Budgets: The TPC may be responsible for managing the budget allocated for the Travel Plan's implementation and associated activities.

In essence, the Travel Plan Coordinator is a crucial role in facilitating a shift towards more sustainable and efficient transportation practices.
