Hazel Road, Southampton

Paul Basham Associates provided support for four separate planning applications on the Siva Group site in Southampton including the construction of an automated transfer building and bridge, a minor amendment application to a warehouse, the implementation of gates at the access road and the erection of a logistics office.

The Proposal

Paul Basham Associates were approached by Southern Planning Practice to assist with the highway aspects for the planning applications. With the site located within a busy industrial park, understanding the impact on traffic and operations was key.

The Approach

Rather than treating each application separately, we carried out a site visit and met with Southampton City Council and the client to understand the site and requirements. We worked closely with the client to review how the site currently operates and how the proposed changes would affect traffic and vehicle movements.

Earlier assessments had looked at parts of the site individually however, to provide a clear understanding of the applications and their impact as a whole, we prepared a combined Transport Statement that covered all four applications. We focused on ensuring the internal bridge was high enough for all vehicles to pass safely underneath, while also showing how the proposed changes would improve overall site efficiency. Our works included assessing vehicle movements, access to neighbouring units, and how on-site operations could be optimised. By telling the story of how these improvements would work in practice, we were able to demonstrate that the proposals would not have a severe highway impact.

The Result

The applications were approved in September 2019. Since then, aspects of the applications have been implemented including the internal bridge, a key part of the project, paving the way for improved operational efficiency on the site.
